Valentine Art Offerings: Make and Wander

I love Valentine’s Day. Not the Hallmark, soap opera version of Valentine’s Day, but the hopeless romantic, look at the world through rose-colored glasses version of Valentine’s Day. The older I get the more realistic I am about people and the world, and yet I still just can’t help being a total softy when it comes to love and romance. Happy ending? I cry. Sad ending? I cry. At this point I just keep a boxes of Kleenex everywhere.

On Friday I’ll give you my Valentine’s gift from me to you, instructions to make an Origami Fold book with Polymer Clay Mosaic covers. But in the meantime, I thought I’d share with you other artists who have Valentine’s offerings.

MAKE:

Thanks to Pati of BABA for forwarding the Pixelated Popup Card by Kate at minieco.co.uk. It’s a great pop-up card with downloadable templates for the card and envelope. I’m looking forward to making a bunch this weekend.

WANDER:

Thanks to Sha Towers from Baylor University for sharing the Books of the Heart || Heart of the Books where “The Crouch Fine Arts Library celebrates Valentines Day with an online exhibition of materials celebrating the heart and things of the heart from its special collections.” Since it is an online exhibition you can see everything from the comfort of your couch. If you click the down arrow on the Home tab you can choose from many different heart related artists’ books. There are many beautiful books worth spending some time.

Do you know of more online Valentine’s offerings? Please feel free to post them in the comments.

CBAA Member Showcase: Robbin Ami Silverberg

At the CBAA Member Showcase, I had the pleasure of seeing more artist’s books by Robbin Ami Silverberg.

I don’t know her personally, but one of her books, A Week of Jewels, has really stayed with me since I first met her last year at Codex. A Week of Jewels, using Ms. Silverberg’s own words, is “a book about a minor event, a missing ring, that signifies loss.” Perhaps because a dear friend of mine is dealing with his mother’s dementia, and perhaps because we all worry about our parent’s forgetfulness, this book is poignant and universal. It is also beautifully made using Ms. Silverberg’s own handmade paper. (She runs a papermaking studio, Dobbin Mill.)

Also at Codex, I found Home Sweet Home to be interesting and thought-provoking. From Ms. Silverberg’s website, “For this book about the home, I “designed” an architectural album of an imaginary middle-class suburban house, filling its plans and layout with the many proverbs I’ve found about woman in the home. The book was printed to look like the almost obsolete Diazo printing (blue-printing), but in fact, is archival inkjet. The proverbs depict a prevailing misogyny that is as funny as it is painful.”

At the CBAA conference this year,  I enjoyed a new-to-me work,  Affadavit.  Says Ms. Silverberg, “Istán Örkény’s story of the same name, from his collections of “One Minute Stories,” was the fillip for this small edition. This artist book about a ‘day in the life…’ of an artist spans segments of a day as seven statements of identity. Despite that each one ends with a declaration of forgery and fraud, Silverberg had them notarized by different notary officers. The process spurred discussions or even conflicts with the notary officers about identity. Each interaction was logged and described in the “Compendium to Affidavit”.

I find Robbin Ami Silverberg’s work to be strong in both content and form and encourage you to wander around her website to enjoy more of her many artists’ books.

This is the last blog post about the CBAA Member Showcase in which I’ll highlight an individual artist. Believe me there were many, many more artists that were more than deserving, these were just a few of the artists whose work spoke to me personally on that particular day. I’ll compile a list of some of the other artists and their websites so that you an experience more of the amazing work available for view at CBAA. I’ll also tell you more about the workshops and lectures that I attended and the interesting art that I was exposed to in those settings. Plenty more to tell you about CBAA. I’ll fit it in over the next few weeks.

Studio Update: Let There Be Drywall

A quick studio update. We have drywall!

And chicken-wire. Sadly that will probably be the only chicken-wire in our yard. Despite lobbying for nearly 6 months I’m making no progress in getting Greg to agree that chickens would be a nice addition to our brood of four kitties. Fresh eggs for breakfast doesn’t seem to be enough incentive. I think I’m making progress on the a-puppy-would-sure-be-nice front, though. Stay tuned.

The front door is on the left. The closed door on the right is to the bathroom. (You can get to the bathroom via an inside door, as well.) I’m looking forward to being able to make cyanotypes and paper in the patio behind the studio and take all that wet, messy and wonderful stuff straight into the sink. No more trekking it through the studio.)

The bottom photo is a tradition Greg and I started nearly 13 years ago when we met. We take shadow pictures wherever we go. (It warms my heart that now my niece, Samantha, takes shadow pictures everywhere, too.) The thing in Greg’s hand is a tape measure. We seem to be measuring everything these days.

I’ve also started space planning and I’ll tell you some more about the books and software that I’m using for inspiration and planning in a blog post or two later this week.
