Pop Up Now II at 23 Sandy Gallery

I’ve been waiting for the Pop Up Now II Show to open at 23 Sandy Gallery  to share with you the “How To” books about Pop Ups that I keep in my studio. I had planned to tell you about those books with you in this week’s blog post but now, as I’m editing the post, I realize I’m out of time. So, here is the first part of two parts:

jihae-kwon (Jihae Kwon)

One of the many great things that Laura Russell and her staff do with shows is build a beautiful online catalog of all the work in each show. Although I try to go in person, and had hoped to go this time, a sick cat means I have to enjoy the books from afar. Grab your favorite beverage and take a moment, or an hour or two, to wander through the amazing books in this show. And, it’s not too late to go in person, the show is open until December 17th.

Some of my favorites, although very hard to choose, include Bettina Pauly’s Grimm’s Fairy Tale Theatre “Hansel and Gretel”, A Different Kind of Carousel by Jihae Kwon, The Day I Met George by Don Drake, and Uri Mwita Mama by Judy Sgantas.

And, for only $25 you can get a full color Exhibition Catalog for your collection. I just ordered mine today.

And now that I’ve enjoyed the pop-up books in 23 Sandy gallery show,  I’ve got to get back in the studio. So, next week I’ll share with you the Pop Up “How To” Books I keep on my bookshelf.

Until then, have a good week.

You’ve Got to Check Out Anne & Mark’s Art Party This Weekend

anne-and-marks-art-party-2016-15-of-19

So what about Anne & Mark’s Art Party? Well, you should go! And I’m interrupting my planned blog post to tell you about it because you still have time… Go during the day on Friday, September 30th or Saturday, October 1st and/or go to the Closing Bash on the night of October 1 featuring Pivot – The Art of Fashion.

Greg and I went on Sunday and had a great time discovering new-to-us artists and enjoying artwork from familiar artists and friends. The Art Party is an enthusiastic explosion of art!

Some of our favorite new-to-us artists include Linda Steenkamp  who made the artwork at the top of this post and Malia Landis who made this ceramic piece, below, titled “California Coast.”

We were intrigued by the photos by Quinn Peck who used a layering technique where the photo was printed on multiple layers of media with different transparencies. The breeze catching the fabric top layer really caught our eyes and it created interesting changes in the image as you moved around it.

We particularly enjoyed the photography of Charlotta Maria Hauksdottir and the way her images really captured the many activities that happen in a room in the course of our daily lives.anne-and-marks-art-party-2016-12-of-19

Greg was particularly enamored with the work by Gale Antokal. I had Gale as a professor years ago and am familiar with her work. Her subjects are ambiguous and imbued with implied narrative. Be sure to click her name and wander around her website.

We were tickled to see the new work that Kent Manske has been doing since his retirement from Foothill.

And new work from Nanette Wylde, also of PreNeo Press. Each of them master printmakers.

We were very glad to get to see some of Robin Lasser’s Dress Tent series. We had hoped to go to Carmel for her show and now are even more sorry we couldn’t make it.

It was also fun to see how Jamila Rufaro and Dotti Cichon are influencing one another on their collaborative work.

And last, but not least, we couldn’t resist taking a shadow picture with this sculpture outside. I didn’t get the name of the artist, if you know, please tell me.

To get an idea of how much art there is to see, just check out this list of visual artists. During your visit, be sure to see work by Stan Welsh, Sieglinde van Damme, Jody Alexander, Barbara Boissevain, Rose Sellery, Beverly Rayner, Brian Taylor, Jay Ruland, Nancy Sevier, and many more.

Paper Dolls at Marin MOCA – 6th Annual Altered/Artist Book Show

I’m very tickled to share with you that Paper Dolls was awarded 3rd Place in this year’s (2015) judging by Donna Seager!…

I participate in the Marin MOCA show each year with the idea that altered books can and should have the same standard of quality, content and detail as any artist book.

I entered the first year thinking that making an altered book was so different from how I usually worked that it would be a good stretch for me as an artist. To my surprise, over time, my experience in making books for Marin MOCA has influenced my regular art practice resulting in such titles as Reliquary, Dear IRS and Breathe for Those Cannot.

This year’s altered/artist book entry, Paper Dolls, began as a feminist manifesto about the role of women in society past and the ever-present attempts to return women to that role. In the entire book, The Complete Book of Sewing by Constance Talbot (1943), there was only one photograph of a man sewing and he was listed as THE expert.

Over time, however, Paper Dolls became a sentimental journey through my childhood. As I wrote the poetry, I realized that so much of how I make art now was influenced by the time I spent then with my mother imagining, designing, and creating clothing. Every trip to the fabric store was a lesson in color theory, textures, and attention to detail. Sensory memories of whispery pattern paper, the whirring sewing machine and being pricked with pins, still in the garment, began to rearrange my ideas.

The finished book is multi-layered with poetry printed on cotton patterned fabric, pages made of layered pattern paper, and pages of the original book. The altered/artist book is sewn both by hand, with Coptic binding, and also by machine, through the cotton and paper pages.

I am fascinated with technology and enjoy incorporating the digital with the traditional book form in a way that serves the book’s content. In the one copy for Marin MOCA,  Paper Dolls features a digital frame which plays a fashion show of pattern packets with women’s clothing from 1900 to the 1970s. This theme is further expressed with inclusion of cut-out paper dolls presented in the “sewing” box with the finished book.
